The first Shared Haemodialysis Care Course began in September 2011, designed by Renal Matrons Melinda Howard from York and Christine Stubbs from Sheffield. It was funded by the Health Foundation and NHS Kidney Care to change relationships between Patients and Health care staff. It has since been funded through a regional innovation grant and currently by Kidney Care UK.
Aims of the Course
Demonstrate the benefits for both patients and staff of Shared Haemodialysis Care
Equip staff with the understanding, practical support and motivation to change or enhance their current ways of working to promote a shared care environment
Provide a framework within which practice can be tailored to individual units
Facilitate a network providing ongoing support, encouragement, professional development and sharing of effective practice
Course Format
The four day (face to face) course in Sheffield is suspended due to the current restrictions on the venue and travel.
The new virtual course is running for the foreseeable future enabling and supporting haemodialysis units to learn and share knowledge and experience together via Microsoft Teams.
The new two day RCN accredited format aims to provide you with the information and direction to develop a plan with your team to initiate or rejuvenate your Shared Haemodialysis Care programmes. Using the experience and support from other teams , the expertise of the course lead and the established shared care resources, we can help you to make improvements to directly benefit your patients.
You will be expected to complete an assessment of your current practice and views along with some personal reflections using a course journal. Following the first study day you will try out your ideas and plans for reporting back on day two a month later. Measurement of impact will be followed up post course. Patients are welcomed to join as one or two of your team members to support a partnership approach from the outset.
